Mobility, Flexibility & Stability Screening

Though Brayan isn’t very physical yet, there’s nothing about the way he moves that would suggest he’s anything but a “neutral” mover. This gives him some flexibility in choosing a loading style, which differs from one side of the plate to the other.

Swing Analysis

From the left side of the plate, Brayan uses a stride-shift style. Though he loads with ample vertical back leg force, his lower body mechanics are the area of biggest need. In the “shifting” style, he pushes away from his back leg versus advancing forward while still pushing “into” the ground with his back leg. He does this from both sides of the plate. Typically, this would limit adjustability on off speed pitches, but from both sides, he uses a slow dissipation of energy into his front leg as a timing adjuster. The upside of this is it buys him time on off-speed pitches, but the downside is the slow dissipation of energy into the front leg will limit power production.   Swing and miss is likely limited with him. Brayan’s preferred method of creating lower body speed is torque force and that force is greater from the right side of the plate.

Brayan’s strength is in his upper body. From the left side of the plate he sequences very well. The upper body load counters the lower half on time. He creates a very tight slotting action and builds kinetic speed through the upper body quickly. This will bode well for power addition as he gets stronger. He gets the bat on plane early and he turns the barrel well, keeping it in the zone through the finish of the arc.

From the right side, he has a more aggressive forward move that separates from his hands further. Therefore he has to use his hands more from the right side to connect with the body. This will get the bat on plane slightly later than he does from the left side. Higher level velocity could be an issue from the right side due to his aggressive horizontal move. This is closing the space to the ball in a fast manner, which tends to make the hitter feel like the ball is sped up.

Launch quickness of his time to impact is excellent despite bat speed being average at best.

Strengths

  • Left Side
    • Time in the zone
    • Adjusitibility on off-speed pitches
    • Tightness and quickness of the turn

  • Right Side
    • Adjustibility on off speed pitches

Weaknesses

  • Left Side
    • Limited lower body power production

  • Right Side
    • Aggressive forward move may hinder the ability to get to plus velocity.
